Rail replacement transport: Deutsche Bahn provides information about construction work and buses!
According to a current announcement from DB (see, among other things, the anticipation of the journey with Deutsche Bahn must be high NDR ) will be postponed because from August 1, 2025 the railway line between Berlin and Hamburg will be closed for extensive construction work. This renovation measure will last nine months and will be accompanied by a comprehensive information campaign.
An information bus will tour from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Hamburg to inform travelers about the planned rail replacement service and the closure. The general renovation is part of a larger project that is being carried out in cooperation with the federal government. Travelers must be prepared for longer travel times and less comfort, as there are no toilets on most replacement buses. In addition, the buses are not located directly at Hamburg Central Station in order to avoid capacity problems at the central bus station.
Planned stops for the information bus
The information bus will stop at several stations:
- Ludwigslust: Di, 8. Juli, 15 bis 19 Uhr, Bahnhof Vorplatz
- Hagenow: Mi, 9. Juli, 7 bis 11 Uhr, Rathausplatz
- Boizenburg: Mi, 9. Juli, 15 bis 19 Uhr, Bahnhof Vorplatz
- Büchen: Do, 10. Juli, 7 bis 11 Uhr, Bahnhof Ausgang Nord
- HH-Bergedorf: Do, 10. Juli, 15 bis 19 Uhr, Bahnhof Ausgang Nord
The construction work is a response to the high volume of traffic on this important route, which is used by around 470 trains daily, including 110 long-distance trains and 270 regional trains ( German railway ). This renovation will be divided into three construction areas: Hamburg–Büchen, Büchen–Dergenthin and Dergenthin–Berlin.
Strengthening infrastructure
As part of the general renovation, over 180 kilometers of tracks and around 200 switches will be replaced. In addition, six new transfer points will be created to ensure greater stability and flexibility in operations. Accessibility at the 28 affected transport stations will also be improved and the quality of stay increased, which includes additional bicycle parking facilities and extended platforms at selected train stations.
These measures are part of Deutsche Bahn's extensive S3 renovation program, which will invest in the rail infrastructure until 2027. A total of up to 53 billion euros will flow into the modernization and maintenance of the rail network, with 8 billion euros specifically earmarked for 13 general renovations ( DB Press ).
These developments are not only a major challenge for travelers, but also a sign of a sustainable and high-performance rail infrastructure. It remains to be seen how travelers will react to the implementation of the measures and what the traffic situation will be like during this time. One can only hope that the DB has a good hand in carrying out this extensive work!
