Rush of visitors after modernization: Schwerin Museum thrilled!

An unprecedented rush of visitors: this Schwerin State Museum has reopened its doors after four years of modernization work and the first few days were a complete success. Around 8,500 people streamed through the newly renovated halls in the first four days after the reopening. With the reopening, which fell in the middle of the long Reformation Day weekend, the museum attracted not only art lovers, but also families and curious people from the region.

A special highlight of the opening is that entry is free for the next four years. This generous initiative is supported by the Dorit and Alexander Otto Foundation and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The financial support offers the museum the opportunity to present its collections and exhibitions in a new light.

New art and old masters

With new exhibition areas totaling 400 square meters, the entire modern area shines in new splendor. Especially in the basement, visitors can admire works of modern art from the 20th and 21st centuries - including works by artists such as Günther Uecker and Cornelia Schmelze. But regional artists such as Matthias Wegenhaupt and Otto Niemeyer-Holstein have also found their place here. On the upper floor, the Old Masters were rearranged, particularly under the direction of curator Gero Seelig, who curated the paintings from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Three Rembrandt paintings will be on display at the museum for the next six months, making the reopening a special event.

The upgrades were no small thing! A total of 7.5 million euros were provided by the Dorit Alexander Otto Foundation, while the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania contributed an additional 4 million euros. Architect Marlene Wetzel, who designed the renovation concept, ensured that the color scheme on the walls also contributed to a harmonious overall concept.

A look forward – the future of museums

The reopening of the Schwerin Museum comes at a time when interactive and digital formats are becoming increasingly important in the museum landscape. Museums are increasingly turning to new technologies to make their content more engaging and reach a wider audience. Interactive applications replace classic museum brochures and audio guides. An example of this is this digital offer, which makes it possible to gain new perspectives on the exhibits in 360-degree tours. This not only offers a fresh experience, but also promotes education and creative thinking, especially among children and young people. Initiatives like the Play Street Museum in the US show the importance of involving children in the learning process and stimulating their curiosity.

Children and young people often have new perspectives when it comes to forms of learning. With the growing importance of participatory cultural mediation, there is an opportunity for us to actively involve the next generation in the design of offerings. Museums are not only places of art, but also schools of life that are intended to promote the creative potential of their visitors.

The combination of traditional art and modern, interactive approaches could represent a groundbreaking model for museums in Germany and beyond in the future.

So get up and discover what that is Schwerin State Museum has to offer! New works, exciting ideas and an unbeatable experience await everyone who wants to experience art and knowledge up close.
