The new Schwerin Museum: Experience art history in a new way!
In a surprising reopening, the Schwerin State Museum has reopened its doors after four years of renovation. With its return to the original architectural style from 1882, an exciting journey through art history is made possible. Ulrike Sophie, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, is represented in a special way: a life-size avatar of her, created by Georg David Matthieu in 1769, is presented in the new exhibition “Prologue. Court Art Meets the Present”. This combination of historical and contemporary art promises to captivate visitors. The museum director Pirko Kristin Zinnow highlights the exciting confrontation between court painters and contemporary art, which can be discovered in the permanent exhibition.
Visitors can look forward to a variety of works of art, including “Leisure Lady (with ocelots)” by Yinka Shonibare from 2001 and works by renowned artists such as Franz von Stuck and Max Liebermann. Particularly noteworthy is the newly designed exhibition of the princely coin collection, which includes, among other things, a round coin table with a magnifying glass. The themed islands dedicated to the artistic legacy of Marcel Duchamp also set exciting accents. These islands were decorated with more than 90 works that the museum acquired in 1997.
Interactive experiences and modern technology
In addition, visitors are offered a revolutionary opportunity to interact with the works of art. The altar of the Schwerin Castle Church from 1562 can be interrogated using AI. Another highlight is that guests are allowed to further design unfinished works of art, which will then travel. The museum not only offers a look into the past, but also the chance to become part of the artistic future.
Another exciting element is the installation that displays the Bitcoin exchange rate in real time on a wall. This modern approach sets the museum apart and makes it a magnet for art lovers of all ages. And the best part? Admission remains free for the first four years, thanks to the generous support of the Dorit and Alexander Otto Foundation, which covered 7.5 of 10 million euros of the construction costs.
While the museum opens grandly, reporting on prominent personalities also continues. Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima, a familiar face on the world's catwalks, has achieved remarkable success throughout her career. After her time as a Victoria's Secret Angel, which lasted until 2018 and made her the highest-paid model, Lima is also active in the entertainment industry. Her return to the catwalks in October 2024 after a break of six years caused a stir.
This lively mix of art, history and prominent news shows that our cultural life in Cologne and beyond is in full bloom. Stay tuned for more exciting news!
