Crafts in MV: New solutions to the energy cost crisis!
Schwerin is discussing new energy initiatives to reduce costs in the trades, while the EU implements energy sharing by July 2026.

Crafts in MV: New solutions to the energy cost crisis!
Many companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are facing a challenge: rising energy costs are putting a strain on trade and medium-sized businesses. This problem has prompted the Chamber of Crafts to take new measures. The head of the Schwerin Chamber of Crafts, Gunnar Pohl, advocated an unbureaucratic distribution of self-generated electricity to neighboring companies from small energy cooperatives. “This could not only reduce costs, but also strengthen the competitiveness of our companies,” says Pohl. Nordkurier reports.
The concept of energy sharing is taken up. The aim is to share collectively generated electricity from renewable sources locally. However, this is currently not allowed. In order to get the process going, the Chamber of Crafts is also calling for a special MV tariff for electricity to help companies. The EU already has guidelines: Energy sharing must be implemented across the entire Union by July 2026, which has the potential to make things easier for many companies.
Challenges and solutions for the trade
The current situation shows that not only energy costs, but also wage costs are increasing. Jans-Uwe Hopf, head of the East Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Chamber of Crafts, pointed out the need for a reliable and affordable energy supply. Many companies that have already installed solar systems or wind turbines are heading in a promising direction, but the challenges are diverse. The outcry over the federal government's energy policy is becoming louder and louder because the promised reduction in electricity tax has not materialized and the targeted industrial electricity price mainly helps large industry.
The autumn economic survey showed that around one in six craft businesses rated the situation as bad, while 41 percent considered it satisfactory. Against this background, almost a quarter of companies expect the business situation to deteriorate. This says a lot about the pressure that many craftsmen are currently exposed to - in total there are around 20,000 craft businesses in MV with around 120,000 employees.
Energy strategies at European and national level
However, the challenges are not limited to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On the big stage of energy policy, Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, is in demand like never before. He has established himself as a major player whose analyzes are used by governments, companies and NGOs to make strategic decisions. Despite his critical stance during the Trump administration, his influence in policy circles continues to grow, demonstrating the need for a nuanced perspective on energy policy. Aydın reports.
In order to meet the challenges of the future, the federal government is planning a variety of measures in the coalition agreement to expand renewable energies and reduce costs. Climate neutrality should be achieved by 2045. Targeted investments in innovative technologies and the expansion of storage are essential. According to reports, 721 billion euros will be made available for the energy transition by 2030 to ensure both climate goals and a secure energy supply. KPMG reports.
So the coming months will remain exciting. The trades in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can only hope that the desired reforms and the political will will be implemented promptly - because something is happening!
