Hubertusmesse delighted Banzkowers with music and game specialties!
On November 9, 2025, the people of Banzkow gathered in a well-attended church to celebrate the St. Hubertus Mass. The hunting horn brass group “Weidmannsheil” from Eldenburg/Lübz, together with the junior band, provides the musical accompaniment to the celebrations. The pieces performed included well-known melodies such as “Gloria”, “Wachtelfanfare”, “Hubertusmarsch” and the “Stritzlöder Jägermesse”. Pastor (ret.) Dirk Heske took the opportunity to talk about the meaning of Saint Hubertus and man's responsibility towards nature, which met with great interest among those present.
One of these exciting explanations came from falconer Reiner Eggert, who clearly explained to the audience that hunting is not only done with weapons, but also includes other forms of interaction with nature. After the ceremonial act, the atmosphere was particularly cozy, as mulled wine, lard sandwiches and the delicious wild bock sausage were on offer. The church's support group spared no effort and prepared a tasty snack for the guests.
A week full of traditions
The second weekend in November promised a lot, as a State Hubertus Mass also took place in Schwerin's Paulskirche. Vigorous horn players from all over the country played here, contributing to the festive atmosphere. Such traditions clearly show how important the connection between hunting culture and community life is in this region.
In many cases, such as the Hubertus Mass, not only does the local community actively fall back on old customs, but awareness of and respect for nature is also promoted. On such occasions it becomes clear how deeply these values are rooted in cultural memory.
In a time when modern life and tradition often struggle with each other, such celebrations are a highlight. This not only honors the history of hunting, but also strengthens the community. It is to be hoped that these traditions will remain alive in the future.
