Joe Alterman inspires Schwerin: Jazz premiere in the Wichernsaal!
Yesterday evening, November 6th, 2025, the premiere of the SVZ Jazz Lounge was celebrated in the Wichernsaal in Schwerin. Almost 150 jazz enthusiasts gathered to experience the performance of the renowned jazz pianist Joe Alterman - his first concert in Germany. Alterman, who arrived from Atlanta, Georgia that morning, proved he has a knack for improvisation as he not only played jazz classics, but also his own compositions.
The event represented a special kind of “blind date” where Alterman met three talented musicians from Schwerin, namely Christoph Möckel (saxophone), Henning Schiewer (bass) and Hannes Richter (drums). Felix Dossmann and Stefan Malzew, who led the evening, ensured that the audience was well entertained. Dossmann had already discovered Alterman in New York in 2017 and was now organizing his first appearance in Germany.
Jazz, improvisation and enthusiasm
The chemistry between Alterman and the Schwerin musicians was noticeable and led to a thrilling experience for the audience. The audience responded enthusiastically to the performances and a gift basket was raffled off during the event, which also created a good atmosphere. Such events are intended to support the opening of the Schweriner Volkszeitung and the Nordkurier to jazz culture, according to the organizers.
In connection with the SVZ Jazz Lounge, an exhibition entitled “Jazz Essentials” also took place, which includes photographs by Felix Dossmann and can be seen in Göttingen until November 15th. The exhibition also shows, among other things, the impressive moments of Alterman's performance.
The event was a complete success and leaves us wanting more musical evenings like this in the region. The potential for future jazz events in Schwerin was impressively demonstrated. Jazz thrives on the improvisation and passion of the musicians - and that's exactly what made this evening something very special.
