Lüneburg rowing talents shine at the national competition in Munich!

The national competition in Munich has put the rowers of the Lüneburg RC Wiking in the spotlight. Alma Leithold, a talented 14-year-old, won impressively at the state championships in Schwerin. Not only did she win the 1000 and 3000 meter singles (lightweight) titles, but she was also the fastest rower in all five northern federal states. With a time of 11:32.80 minutes over 3000 meters, she was 20 seconds faster than her pursuer. Moritz Brich, a teammate, is sure: Alma will be “at the top” in the next competition, which will take place on the Olympic regatta course in Oberschleißheim landezeitung.de.

Moritz himself has already caused a stir at the national level at the German vintage championships in Cologne by qualifying for the A final over 1500 meters. In the boys' U17 category, he was even ranked sixth fastest nationwide. Henri Scholz from the Welle Rowing Club is also going to the national competition after triumphing over 2500 meters and 1000 meters at the state championships.

Travel and accommodation

To get to the competition in Munich, the Lüneburg RC Wiking traveled by train with 15 qualified rowers. Some fathers helped transport the boats by car, while the rowers stayed overnight in a gym to prepare for the competitions. These logistical challenges were overcome through the good cooperation with SV Scharnebeck, which shows that team spirit counts not only on the water, but also on the journey, reports rc-wiking.de.

The Lüneburg ladies also showed their skills at the competition in Munich. Lena Dreeßen and Maria Freese started in the double sculls in the lightweight class. They took second place in the long distance and thus reached the final for the short distance. In the short-distance race, however, they had to give way to another boat shortly before the finish and fell back to third place, while they were clearly ahead of their pursuers from Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia.

Results and outlook

The Wiking foursome, consisting of Anni and Lion Feuerbacher, Antonia Hagemann, Julius Schneider and helmsman Maibritt Grauel, had less luck on the long distance and ended up in fifth place. Nevertheless, they received permission to start in the 4th run of the mixed quadruple sculls. In the short-distance race, the team took fourth place, a respectable success ahead of the boat from Hesse.

At the same time, the current competition cuts a fine figure in the German Youth Cup rankings, where around 1,930 young athletes from over 100 rowing clubs compete against each other. Hamburg, for example, performed strongly, but Lüneburg's RC Wiking also shows that there is a lot of potential in the youth sector, so lrv-hamburg.de.

In summary, it can be said that the rowers of the Lüneburger RC Wiking left a strong impression not only on the water, but also on land. The coming competitions will certainly be exciting, and the local sports community can hope for further success.
