By bike to Finland: 1400 km for our city partnership!

On Saturday, July 5, 2025, the time has come: Five cyclists and two cyclists from ADFC Schwerin break up for an exciting tour to Vaasa in Finland. The entire route is around 1400 kilometers and also leads through the Swedish twin town of Växjö. The departure takes place at 8.30 a.m. on Bertha-Klingberg-Platz in Schwerin. Mayor Rico Badenschier will ceremoniously say goodbye and give you greeting addresses as a sign of support for this sporting and cultural company.

This cycling trip has a special occasion: the 55th anniversary of the city partnership between Schwerin and Vaasa. Roberto Koschmidder, board member of the ADFC Schwerin and tour guide, sees the participants as an ambassador for the city and touring. With this tour, cyclists not only want to celebrate the anniversary, but also symbolize the connection between the cities. Similar positive experiences were already gained in a trip to the anniversary in the Italian twin town of Reggio Emilia, which caused a lot of enthusiasm.

On their adventurous path, cyclists are always reminded of the fact that cyclists and pedestrians are unprotected road users. As the ADFC Schwerin points out, you have no crumple zone, which requires prudent behavior in road traffic. Cyclists should act confidently, but defensively to navigate safely through traffic. Foresight driving is crucial in order to be able to react quickly to the mistakes of other road users. Turning should always be announced by hand signals so that it is predictable for others. The distance from large vehicles such as trucks and vans is also important because they often have difficulty recognizing cyclists in certain angles. Driving ghosts, whether on streets or bike paths, should be avoided.

Safe driving represents an essential component of the tour, because not only the sporting challenges have to be managed, but also the traffic realities on the route. The ADFC Schwerin draws attention to the fact that all road users have to consider the applicable traffic rules in order to avoid accidents.

The invitation is aimed not only at the participants, but also to the Schwerin, who are called to say goodbye to the wheel group at the starting point or to accompany them on the first kilometers. The cooperation and the joint joy of cycling are in the foreground on this tour. The route not only offers a physical challenge, but is also an opportunity to cross the city limits and to consolidate the friendship between the partner cities again.
