New million-dollar after-school care center in Schwerin: Ideal for the children's future!
In Schwerin, the care offering for children is being significantly expanded. Today, July 15, 2025, the foundation stone was laid for a new after-school building at John Brinckman Elementary School. The new building will be built on the site of the former “Gänseblümchen” daycare center on Johannes-R.-Becher-Straße and is intended to meet the increasing demand for after-school care places in the city.
The project, which is estimated to have a total cost of around 9 million euros, receives financial support from state funding and a special needs allocation. Over 50 percent of the costs are funded, which makes implementation much easier for the city. The new after-school care center is scheduled to be completed in August 2026, just at the time when all children in Schwerin will have a legal right to all-day after-school care. This represents a big step towards improving the compatibility of family and work for many parents.
Space for many children
The planned three-story building will offer space for 16 groups, which corresponds to a total of 352 childcare places. At maximum capacity, an additional 23 places are provided through the dual use of school rooms. The after-school facility also includes 30 parking spaces, including three with charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and several barrier-free parking spaces. These modern amenities are not only practical, but also environmentally friendly, as the roofs of the new building will be greened and equipped with a photovoltaic system.
In order to realize the outdoor facilities of the after-school care center, the old daycare building will first be demolished as soon as the Peace School has completed its renovation work, probably in the summer of 2026. Completion of the outdoor facilities is planned for spring 2027. Until then, as can be read in [Schwerin](https://www. Schwerin.de/politik-verwaltung/dienste/verwaltungsleistung/Hortbetreuung/), the offer for the children will be maintained through the existing offers in other facilities.
Care times and financing
The new facility will provide full-day support from Monday to Friday for up to six hours per day. This is a huge relief for working parents, as part-time support can be used for up to three hours a day. It is important to mention that the funding also applies during the holiday periods in order to best take the needs of the families into account.
Another advantage for parents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is that they have been exempt from parental contributions for after-school care since January 1, 2020. This provides additional relief for families who have to take care of their school-age children. Government MV also reports that if there is increased need during the holidays, the costs can be covered by the local youth welfare providers if this is not reasonable.
In summary, it can be said that the laying of the foundation stone for the new after-school building is not only a sign of the growing city of Schwerin, but also makes a decisive contribution to improving the care situation for children and thus relieving the burden on families.
