New Späti in Schwerin: Post office creates excitement!
A very special place has been established in Schwerin since the beginning of September: the new Späti called “Späti61”. Address? Friedrich-Engels-Straße 2C, right next to Burger King, where Café Barvinok used to be. The idea behind it is simple and ingenious: a store that offers everything you need for everyday life, with drinks, snacks and even international products. But the best is yet to come: From Monday, November 3rd, the Späti will also function as a post office. That causes a stir, like that Northern Courier reported.
25-year-old Ossi, a Kurd from Syria, is one of the founders of Späti and runs the business together with a friend as a partnership under civil law (GbR). Ossi learned most of his language skills autodidactically. Impressive, right? His family still lives in Syria and is visibly proud of the successes Ossi has achieved here in Germany. “It’s nice to see that people appreciate what we offer,” says Ossi, who also offers a popular copying service for the neighborhood with his Späti.
A post office with a heart
The Späti will be a fully-fledged post office and not just a parcel station. The opening times are ambitious: daily from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Ossi says that remodeling the store took three months and that he did a lot of the work himself, with the help of friends. However, difficulties in the delivery of materials and technical preparations for the post caused delays. But the initial reactions from customers are consistently positive.
This positive news comes at a time when there are also signs of turbulence in the political landscape. Recently the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) decided to lay down its weapons and disband. This follows a call from jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan. The PKK, which has been fighting for an independent Kurdish state for 40 years, has shifted its focus to greater autonomy and rights for the Kurds. This situation is reflected in the community of around 1.3 million Kurds in Germany Media service integration noticed. Many people who have fled from conflict areas such as Syria, Iraq and Turkey can be found here.
A new chapter for the Kurdish community
The PKK's decision to disband is seen by various political actors around the world as an opportunity for a new dialogue. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described the decision as an important step towards peace, and Kurdish politicians are also hoping for negotiations that could give the Kurds more rights. In Germany, the Kurdish communities are strongly represented in society, but fight against prejudice and discrimination.
Ossi and his Späti61 are part of this lively and diverse community. By preserving their cultural roots and at the same time finding a place in everyday German life, they show that integration is not only possible, but also enriching. And who knows? Maybe the Späti61 will soon become more than just a place for shopping - maybe it will become a meeting place for the neighborhood where stories and cultures meet. There is something going on there, and it remains exciting to see how things will develop in the lives of Ossi and his community.
