New surveillance system at Schwerin's Marienplatz: More security with 24 cameras!

On July 21, 2025, Marienplatz in Schwerin was equipped with a new surveillance system that is intended to significantly increase security in the city center. How NDR reported, the new video technology includes a total of 24 cameras, which now also cover previously blind spots in which crimes were often recorded.

The introduction of this system became necessary after the old camera system failed due to a server defect at the beginning of the year. Until the new cameras were installed, temporary mobile camera towers were in use, which are now being dismantled. Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) visited the new facility and highlighted the improved image quality. The new technology enables real-time transmission of the recordings via a fiber optic cable directly to the police station, where they are stored for a period of seven days.

Improved security and faster response times

The new system not only provides comprehensive surveillance of Marienplatz, but also improves the ability to identify criminals. Loud Northern Courier Pegel emphasized that the police can now react much more quickly to dangerous situations and support the investigation of crimes. The improved facial recognition means that there are no longer any blind spots on the pitch.

The investment in the new technology amounts to 250,000 euros. Marienplatz is currently the only location in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that receives such surveillance from the police. The background to this measure is the increased crime and harassment in the area. It was only in January 2023 that a fatal altercation was recorded at the back entrance of a nearby shopping center, but it was not captured by the cameras at the time.

The topic of video surveillance in an international comparison

Video surveillance is a topic that is hotly debated not only in Germany, but also worldwide. A recent study by heyData shows that the use of video surveillance in Germany is relatively cautious compared to other countries. While cities like London have more than a million cameras, thanks to the new technology in Schwerin there are now just 24 cameras that play a security-promoting role.

The discussion about expanding the number of surveillance cameras in Germany primarily revolves around heavily frequented places. Critics warn of possible invasions of privacy and social pressure that could result from constant surveillance. In this context, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) sets clear rules, while less strict requirements often apply in other countries.

With the new surveillance technology at Marienplatz, Schwerin would like to take the first step towards greater security - whether this ultimately affects the freedom of citizens remains to be seen.
