The topic of video surveillance in international comparison

video surveillance is a topic that is not only discussed in Germany, but also hotly worldwide. A recent study by Heydata shows that dealing with video surveillance in Germany is relatively reserved in international comparison. While cities like London have more than a million cameras, thanks to the new technology, it is now just 24 cameras that take on a security -promoting role.

The discussion about an expansion of the number to surveillance cameras in Germany is primarily about heavily frequented places. Critics warn of possible interventions in privacy and social pressure that could result from constant observation. In this context, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) sets clear rules, while in other countries there are often fewer strict requirements.

With the new surveillance technology at Marienplatz, Schwerin wants to take the first step towards more security - whether this ultimately also affects the freedom of citizens.
