Schwerin shocked: cyclists injured every other day!

Traffic accidents in Schwerin are increasingly getting on the nerves of citizens. Current statistics show that cyclists and pedestrians are the most injured groups in traffic accidents. New accident statistics for 2024, presented by Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD), highlight the urgent problem. In 2023, 180 cyclists were injured in Schwerin, which corresponds to an average of one injured every two days. Overall, the number of injured people rose by 7.4% to 348 compared to the previous year.

The data shows that 40% of those injured were cyclists, even though they were only involved in 3% of the accidents. Pedestrians were involved in only 1% of accidents, but accounted for 16% of those injured. These figures make it clear that particularly vulnerable road users are at risk in road traffic, as the Ostsee Zeitung reports.

Steady increase in traffic accidents and hit-and-runs

A total of 3,057 accidents were registered in Schwerin, which represents an increase of 0.4% compared to the previous year. What is particularly worrying is the increase in hit-and-runs, which have increased by almost 10% to 956 cases. The most common causes of accidents resulting in personal injury are right of way (30 cases), speed (28 cases) and insufficient distance (24 cases).

A tragic incident causes horror: a 65-year-old driver was killed when a 69-year-old man overtook her in a 30 zone. Such accident stories have the potential to be heard, but it is primarily the data that underlines the pressure to act. Over 301 accidents with injured people were reported last year, which is six more than in 2022, according to a Nordkurier analysis.

Focus on prevention measures

In view of these alarming figures, the police have taken preventive measures. 183 events for around 4,000 participants were organized to prevent traffic accidents, especially for children. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement in road traffic accident statistics. The Destatis statistics aims to obtain comprehensive and reliable data in order to sustainably increase road safety.

With a variety of measures ranging from traffic education, road construction and vehicle technology, the hope remains that the roads in Schwerin will become safer again. Citizens are called upon to become more aware of the dangers in road traffic and to do their part to ensure road safety.
