Six left-wing extremists charged with brutal attack on Thor Steinar store
Six people are at the center of a massively sensational case that the Federal Prosecutor's Office set in motion. The accused are four women and two men who are suspected of belonging to a militant left-wing extremist organization. They are accused, among other things, of membership in a criminal organization and attempted murder Baltic Sea newspaper reported.
Accordingly, the suspects are said to have committed their crimes in April 2022. In a single day they raided Thor Steinar stores in Schwerin, Erfurt, Magdeburg and Halle. Things were particularly brutal in Schwerin, where the attackers beat up the sales staff and used butyric acid and pepper spray, which resulted in material damage of over 60,000 euros. But this is just the tip of the iceberg: other attacks also took place in Budapest, including attacks with batons and hammers.
Charge details
The indictment was filed before the State Security Senate of the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court and covers a variety of criminal offenses. In addition to attempted murder, the defendants are also accused of grievous bodily harm, forgery of documents, theft, damage to property and fraud. At the end of June 2025, the Federal Prosecutor's Office officially brought charges against the six German nationals: Nele A., Emilie D., Paula P., Luca S., Moritz S. and Clara W., as Press portal supplemented.
Interestingly, four of the defendants - Nele A., Emilie D., Paula P. and Moritz S. - are adolescents who are being treated in accordance with the Youth Court Act (§ 105 JGG). What is particularly striking is the behavior of the accused, who not only took part in the robberies, but also rented apartments under false identities in order to camouflage their activities and finance their association.
The rise of left-wing violence in context
The incidents in Schwerin are just one example of the increasing willingness to use violence within left-wing extremist circles. According to reports from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the number of people in the left-wing extremist scene in Germany rose to around 38,000 in 2024, an increase compared to the previous year. Particularly alarming is the increase in left-wing extremist-motivated crimes, which climbed to 5,857 offenses in 2024, an increase of 37.9% compared to 2023. Violence against political opponents, especially from the right-wing scene, is increasing, which does not make the situation in Germany any easier.
The decline in violent conflicts with police recorded in 2024 may indicate that left-wing extremist groups have changed their focus and are now increasingly targeting other political movements. In North Rhine-Westphalia, where Cologne is also located, there were 1,180 documented left-wing extremist crimes in 2024, which further illustrates the already worrying situation, as can be read in the report by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
The defendants now have to answer in court, while the public looks forward to further developments in this explosive case. All of the accused are currently in custody and the crimes once again shed light on the challenges that left-wing extremism poses in our society.
