Concerns about Woldegker sports center: Ministry stops funding application!

A recent letter from the Ministry of the Interior, Construction and Digitalization in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has dashed hopes that construction of the sports center in Woldegk will begin soon. The application for a special needs allocation was rejected on the grounds that there was no immediate prospect of funding. This information comes after coordination with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Sport.

The disappointment over the decision runs deep in Woldegk. What is particularly annoying is a note in the letter that gives the impression that it is an accusation: The city was supposedly planning to apply for funding from the sports facility construction guidelines, but this was not noted in the financing plan. This intention was already discussed with Minister Christian Pegel in January, who rated the “new sports center” project as positive at the time.

A promised ray of hope

Minister Pegel, who explained the planning documents for the sports center in detail in January, visited the barracks with the current changing rooms and said that financing was challenging but by no means impossible. The school management of the regional school with primary school “Wilhelm Höcker” was present at this meeting, as the school plays an important role in the concept of the sports center. Together with the sports club and the city of Woldegk, a written expression of interest in sharing the sports center was drawn up.

An important point emphasized by the minister is the need for changing rooms and sanitary facilities for students, which is much easier to argue for than a bowling alley. This could give Woldegk a strategic advantage in the next funding application for 2026. The city plans to use older building concepts that do not require a bowling alley.

Funding opportunities at a glance

Sports facilities concept offers support in researching and applying for funding and shows that there are a variety of options at EU, federal and state levels.

The city of Woldegk has the opportunity to position itself in a context of visionary sports facility projects. Minister Pegel's committed attitude and the existing discussions with the student body and the sports club could be the key to success. It remains exciting to see how the situation develops and whether Woldegk can make a new attempt for funding in 2026.
