Spading for new rail connection: Lübeck and Schwerin closer together!
Schwerin, Deutschland - On June 13, 2025, the rail connection between Lübeck and Bad Kleine took place. The groundbreaking ceremony for this ambitious project was made by numerous traffic specialists, including Dr. Wolfgang Blank, the Minister of Economics, Infrastructure, Tourism, Work Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Under his leadership, a railway line of a total of 63 kilometers is modernized and electrified. The aim is to significantly improve local transport and transport of goods and to optimize the travel times between Lübeck and Schwerin to up to 160 km/h by completing the new connection by 2028. According to hl live this expansion represents a key project for the region.
A central aspect of the project is the introduction of the gallery curve at Bad Kleinen, which enables direct trips between Lübeck and Schwerin without change. At the same time, a new railway overpass is being built in Gallenin via Zickhusener Weg. Two new digital signal boxes, which are created in Bobitz and Gallenin, ensure the digitization of the route. This not only increases efficiency in local transport, but also digitally upgraded all rail traffic.
Details on the construction project and the closures
The expansion takes place in three planning approval sections (PFA), which are divided as follows:
- Pfa 1: Bad Kleine - Grevesmühlen/Börzow (including a connecting curve near Gallenin)
- Pfa 2: Grevesmühlen/Börzow-Landes border Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania/Schleswig-Holstein
- Pfa 3: State border Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania/Schleswig-Holstein-Lübeck
In the first construction phase, the Grevesmühlen - Kleinen route is closed until July 31, 2025 to carry out the necessary work. Information on the replacement timetables and detailed building information can be accessed on the website of the Deutsche Bahn part of the larger Germany cycle
This expansion is not only a local, but also a national measure that takes place as part of the Germany-stroke project. The Germany -Takt provides to optimize the rail network by 2030 in such a way that travel accelerates and capacities are adjusted in rail freight transport. With this strategy, the aim is to significantly shorten travel times between big cities and to develop uniform timetables ( BMV ).
The entire expansion includes an investment volume of over 42 billion euros and should not only increase the quality of rail transport, but also bring about a cultural change in the planning of the infrastructure. In addition, the need to identify bottlenecks and develop targeted solutions so that the rail system is tailored to the needs of users. The first implementation of the expansion plans are a sign of a future-oriented transport policy and show that the political agenda in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania sets the course for improved accessibility and more environmentally friendly public transport.
