Schwerin State Museum opens: four years of free cultural enjoyment!

After four years of renovation work, the Schwerin State Museum will reopen its doors on October 30, 2025. The official opening took place in a festive setting, with, among others, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, Culture Minister Bettina Martin and museum director Dr. Pirko Zinnow. The modernization of the museum was an extensive project that cost 11.5 million euros. A large portion of the funding came from the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation, which provided 7.5 million euros, while the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania contributed around 4 million euros.

A special highlight of the reopening is free entry for all visitors, which is valid for the next four years. The museum not only wants to increase the number of existing visitors, but also attract new visitors who may be setting foot in the new, modernly designed exhibition rooms for the first time.

Redesigned rooms and extensive collections

After the renovation, the museum presents itself with impressive new architecture and functional improvements. An impressive 400 square meters of additional exhibition space were created. Visitors can look forward to three entrances, which make access much easier. There is also a new café and a book shop that invite you to linger. The museum director emphasizes the successful combination of old and modern art, which is now presented in newly designed exhibition rooms.

Modern art from the 20th and 21st centuries is shown in the basement, including works by prominent artists such as Günther Uecker and Cornelia Schmelze. The region's artistic heritage is also represented, with works by artists such as Matthias Wegenhaupt and Otto Niemeyer-Holstein. On the upper floor, the Old Masters are presented in an impressively curated manner, including three loans of Rembrandt paintings from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, which can be seen in Schwerin for six months.

Innovations and accessibility

The extensive modernization work not only included a new presentation of the works of art, but also numerous technical improvements. Accessibility was significantly increased by installing electric lifting platforms and automatic doors. There is also now modern technical equipment and WiFi, which makes the museum experience appealing for all generations. The architect Marlene Wetzel also had a good hand when it came to the color design of the walls, which exposed historical layers of paint.

In summary, it can be said that the Schwerin State Museum is not only continuing a long tradition with its reopening, but is also bringing a breath of fresh air into the cultural landscape. The combination of modern technology, new design and a multifaceted art presentation could well become a new cultural magnet for Schwerin.
