Sternberg on the brink? Citizens complain about dead city center and less life!

In Sternberg, a small town that is often overshadowed by its larger neighbors, there are critical voices regarding the quality of life. A participant in the Heimatcheck made insightful observations that show that there is less going on in Sternberg than in other small towns. Citizens complain about a lack of cleanliness, inadequate bus connections and a limited range of restaurants. The city center in particular is perceived as “extinct,” which greatly reduces the attractiveness of the place. Events like the Rapeseed Blossom Festival are not enough to calm the minds of residents after previously popular events like the Heimatfest and the Susa Party fell by the wayside ( Northern Courier ).

A central problem appears to be the lack of leisure activities for young people, who can hardly find any alternatives apart from sporting activities. In addition, the connection to the train to Blankenberg is anything but optimal, which further limits the mobility of the population. The call to participate in the Home Check could certainly provide an incentive because residents are encouraged to share their opinions and experiences in order to tackle the situation together. There's even a raffle of cash prizes for participants - a nice motivation!

Experience leisure and nature

Although Sternberg faces challenges, the region certainly has its charms. There are a variety of activities in nature in the Sternberg area, ranging from cycling to hiking to canoeing ( Mecklenburg-Schwerin ). The Sternberg Lake District is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, boasting attractions such as the open-air museum and one of the largest collections of carriage tours in Germany. There are also numerous artist studios, workshops, parks and castles to discover here. The popular “AdventureReich Bienenstraße” invites you to experience nature in a creative way.

These offers could contribute to the region's attractiveness, especially for young people, as it gives them more opportunities to spend their free time actively and varied. Studies show that young people in particular are very capable of actively shaping their living environment and having a positive influence on urban development. It is important that this initiative is also recognized in Sternberg ( BBSR ).

The voice of the youth

A central point of the current discussion is the involvement of young people in small towns. They can often provide lively impulses through their own initiative and assumption of responsibility. In Sternberg, too, the focus should be on offering young people a platform to take part in urban development. When it comes to improving leisure activities or creating new events, creative ideas from young citizens can make a big difference.

The encouraging words from recent research on the effectiveness of youth projects in small towns could provide a framework and incentive to create more civic engagement. This is the only way to pave the way out of the perceived “lifelessness” and perhaps Sternberg will soon become a place where there is more going on again!
