Lecture on Schwerin Castle: Experience heritage and restoration!
A real reason for joy for all culture lovers in Schwerin: The residential ensemble around Schwerin Castle was recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO on July 27, 2024. This decision, which was made at a meeting of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, is the result of years of effort dating back to 2000, when the Pro Schwerin association launched the first initiatives to apply. Despite initial skepticism among city and state politicians, the efforts found increasing support with the support of Gottfried Kiesow, co-founder of the German Foundation for Monument Protection.
The application for the “Schwerin Castle Ensemble” was finally submitted in Paris in 2023 and represents an impressive cultural heritage. The ensemble currently includes not only the Schwerin Castle, but also 37 other historical buildings as well as a magnificent park designed by Peter Joseph Lenné. This setting not only represents monarchical symbolism and romantic historicism of the 19th century, but also reflects a fascinating history that dates back over 1,000 years.
Lecture on the history of the castle
To honor the importance of this cultural heritage, a lecture event will take place next Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Cultural Forum in the Schleswig-Holstein House. The purpose of this event is to shed more light on the restoration work of Schwerin Castle between 1974 and 1990. The speaker Dr. Jakob Schwichtenberg will speak about the handover of the Throne Room to the public in 1974, which was initially used as the Philharmonic's concert hall before the restoration of the historic 19th century state and social rooms began.
From the regular reports on GDR television to the recognition of the castle as a recognized cultural heritage - the historical significance of Schwerin Castle is diverse. Admission to this interesting lecture event is free, giving everyone the chance to immerse themselves in the history of the castle and its restoration.
Comprehensive cultural heritage
The residential ensemble, the core of which is Schwerin Castle, is not only architecturally remarkable. It also forms a center for administration, culture and education that reflects the development of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Over 30 components of the ensemble are part of the world heritage, which is also recognized as an EU bird sanctuary “Lakes Schwerin”. This unique location between the city and the natural area makes the ensemble not only an important tourist destination, but also a symbol of the region's cultural identity.
In summary, recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site represents a significant step towards the preservation and appreciation of this historic site. The architectural masterpieces, the significance and the historical narratives associated with this ensemble make it an indispensable part of Germany's cultural heritage, which is now also internationally recognized.
