Ypsomed celebrates the construction of the new factory in Schwerin with 200 guests!

Something is happening in Schwerin! On September 30, 2025, Ypsomed, the Swiss manufacturer of medical technology, celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its new production plant. Over 200 guests from politics, business and the construction industry were present to celebrate this special moment. CEO Simon Michel emphasized the great importance of this project for the company and the region itself. The new plant is part of the major “Schwerin 2” project, which is being invested with over half a billion francs.

What exactly is in store for us? The new production building will be built on a total area of 37,000 square meters and includes modern production halls, a fully automated high-bay warehouse and an administration and technical building. Construction work began in January 2023, and the foundation stone was laid on October 25, 2023. At this ceremony, a time capsule was even placed in the cement foundation - a look into the future that shows how important this project is for Ypsomed.

Sustainability in focus

Ypsomed relies on sustainable construction: the factory is certified according to the international LEED Gold standard. Photovoltaic systems are planned on the roofs of the new production buildings. In addition, Ypsomed has already applied for approval to build a 250 meter high wind turbine to ensure long-term electricity supply. With these measures, the company reaffirms its commitment to environmentally friendly technologies.

Growth and jobs

Ypsomed currently employs around 500 people in Schwerin, and the number is expected to increase to 600 by the end of 2026 and to 1,000 by 2030. What is particularly exciting is that a total of around 350 new jobs will be created and 20 additional training positions will be offered as part of the first construction phase. The number of training positions for 2026 is also to be increased from the current 36 to around 60, including dual study programs in mechanical engineering. This not only strengthens the skilled worker base in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but also shows Ypsomed's clear focus on regional commitment and support of the local community.

In addition, Ypsomed plans to add another 17,000 square meters of production space in a second construction phase by 2029. This expansion is part of a global growth strategy that will allow the company to be closer to customers. In addition to Schwerin, Ypsomed is also expanding its production capacities in China and is planning a new production site in the USA. The existing locations in Switzerland, including Burgdorf and Solothurn, are also being continuously optimized.

The official opening of the new plant is planned for early 2027. With this expansion in Schwerin, Ypsomed underlines that the region is not only an important location for the company, but also for the entire medical technology industry in Europe.
