On July 15, 2025, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania celebrated an important day for sport. For the fifth time, the country's sports clubs have been honored for their outstanding achievements in the area of violence prevention and integration. The special prize “Sport instead of violence” is awarded by the State Council for Crime Prevention and the State Sports Association and aims to recognize the commitment of clubs that goes beyond the sporting context. Seven clubs were awarded and, in addition to an appreciative certificate, received prize money of 700 euros each, as ndr.de reports.
State Secretary Wolfgang Schmülling, who attended the award ceremony, highlighted the crucial role of sports clubs as integration factors for young people. Especially in times when many young people come from different cultural backgrounds, sports activities have a violence-preventing effect and contribute to social integration. The State Sports Association President Andreas Bluhm also praised the voluntary commitment, without which many of these initiatives would not be possible, as can be read in a report by the MV government.
Award winners in focus
The following seven clubs were awarded out of 16 applications:
- Handballsportverein Insel Usedom/Seebad Ahlbeck e. V.: Der größte Sportverein der Region setzt sich besonders für Jugend- und Präventionsarbeit ein und fördert die deutsch-polnische Verständigung.
- HSG Uni Rostock e. V.: Mit über 75 Jahren Engagement erhält die Hochschulsportgruppe die Auszeichnung für ihr Jugendschutzkonzept, das speziell Kinder und Jugendliche vor sexualisierter Gewalt schützt.
- TSV Friedland 1814 e.V.: Der älteste Sportverein Deutschlands tritt aktiv gegen Gewalt ein und kooperiert eng mit Schulen und Kindergärten.
- FC Pio Torgelow e.V.: Hier stehen die Integration von Spielern verschiedenster Herkunft und ein erfolgreiches Projekt zur Jugendberatung im Vordergrund, das in einer preisgekrönten Dokumentation festgehalten wurde.
- SV „Rot-Weiß“ Penkun e.V.: Fokussiert auf Jugendliche, fördert der Verein Fairness, Respekt und internationale Zusammenarbeit, inklusive Fußballturniere mit polnischen und ukrainischen Jugendlichen.
- Fanatic D!ance e.V.: Dieser Tanzverein sammelt Spenden zur Unterstützung von Kinderschutzprojekten und vermittelt Werte wie Teamwork und Toleranz.
- Kampfkunstverein Jion e. V.: Der Verein bietet durch kontinuierliche Projekte zur Gewaltprävention einen wichtigen Beitrag zur gewaltfreien Konfliktlösung an.
Sport as an integration factor
The awards are not only a recognition of the excellent work of these clubs, but also a symbol of the important role that sport plays in intercultural processes. According to bpb.de, sports clubs are central to the integration of migrants and create meeting spaces in which cultural differences can be overcome.
For this reason, it is essential to support such initiatives and to recognize the voluntary work that holds a society together. The award ceremony was a valuable step in this direction and showed that prevention and integration can go hand in hand - and not just in sport.
