Boldekow solar park: 80,000 panels for Vodafone’s green future!
In the small community of Boldekow, located in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, sustainability is very important. On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, a new solar park was put into operation here, which not only includes an impressive 80,000 bifacial solar panels, but also has a very special mission: it produces its electricity exclusively for Vodafone. This decision will make a significant contribution to the telecom giant's ambitious renewable energy goals since the conclusion of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in 2023.
With an area of 46 hectares, the equivalent of around 65 football fields, the Boldekow solar park will generate more than 53 gigawatt hours annually. This should save around 20,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. The construction work for the project took two years and was met with some resistance, particularly because of the conversion of agricultural land. Nevertheless, those responsible are optimistic: the solar park will be open for tours after it goes into operation and will therefore also be accessible to interested visitors.
A step into the green future
The initiative for this solar park comes from the energy company Iberdrola, which is also driving other important projects in Germany. The company recently opened a 56 MWp solar park in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which underlines the progress in the field of renewable energy. According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, renewable energies have been an important pillar of energy supply in Germany since 1990 and are seeing continually increasing investments. For 2024, these are estimated at around 32 billion euros, even if that represents a decrease compared to the previous year.
It becomes clear that renewable energies are essential to achieving the federal government's climate goals. In 2024, they helped avoid around 256 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. It is particularly worth mentioning that the share of renewable energies in final energy consumption for heating and cooling is 18.1 percent, which represents a slight increase compared to the previous year.
A role model for the industry
Vodafone, the major telecommunications company, plans to procure a total of 410 GWh of solar power in several countries, including Germany, Portugal and Spain. The Boldekow Solar Park is a small but important part of their strategy to use 100 percent renewable energy in their operations. Through the stable and predictable supply of electricity from renewable sources, Vodafone not only shows a good knack for sustainability, but also makes an important contribution to reducing its own CO2 footprint.
The future looks promising, not just for Boldekow, but for all of Germany. The solar park is impressive evidence that the expansion of renewable energies is making progress, even if some regions, such as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, are struggling with approval delays. Nevertheless, here in Boldekow we can see how innovative ideas and a green approach can turn things around.
Further information about the upcoming tours of the solar park is expected soon, which will also make the project even more attractive for the local population.
