Special trip to Friedland: Nostalgie awakens lust on track reactivation!
Friedland, Deutschland - A very special event brought the railway fans together in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on July 12, 2025. The highly expected special trip from Neubrandenburg to Friedland took place on Saturday. This event, organized by the passenger association "Pro Bahn", was not only a nostalgic experience, but also a strong sign for reactivating the decommissioned route.
The event attracted railway enthusiasts from various cities, including Munich, Weimar, Berlin, Rostock, Wismar and Bielefeld. Around 100 participants had enrolled for the booked trip to revive the old route in a historic train, a so -called piglet tax of the Neustrelitz Hafenbahn Hafenbahn. Everyday life and memories came to life when Ulrike Kühn reported on her trips in the 1980s.
A look at the railway line
The Neubrandenburg-Friedland route was opened in 1884 and regular passenger transport was discontinued in 1994. Although freight trains are already on the route and are to be expanded for around nine million euros by the end of 2026, there is still no specific plan for regular passenger transport. Nevertheless, an analysis by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (VMV) transport company shows that there is a potential of around 530 passengers per working day. This predicted number could support the reactivation of the route.
Marcel Drews from Pro Bahn expressed hope that the special trip will continue to keep interest in the route. The Foredance encouraged the participants to exchange their thoughts and ideas about the future of passenger transport. Because only through an active discussion and commitment of the community will it be possible to improve mobility in the region.
a full day for the participants
The special trip started in Neubrandenburg at 9:40 a.m. and reached Friedland after a 90-minute journey at 11:12 a.m. The participants then had almost an hour and a half to explore the city's sights. Including the historic station building and a locomotive scale museum, which bring a piece of railway history to life. The deputy mayor of Friedland, Undine Wölk, warmly welcomed the guests and emphasized the important role of mobility for the region.
The return trip started at 12:35 p.m. and landed in Neubrandenburg again on time at 2:04 p.m. The ticket prices were affordable at € 17.00 for adults and € 10.00 for children (up to 14 years). During the trip, the participants received information about the history of the route and received valuable tips on other sights in Friedland.
The event can be seen as a successful initiative that not only keeps the memory of past times, but also sets the course for the future of rail transport in the region. Mobility and a strong network of supporters make it clear here - so there is a lot of one to pull the right ticket for the future.
