Closure of the Hamburg-Berlin railway line: Commuters have to change!
The upcoming general renovation of the railway line between Hamburg and Berlin will bring massive changes for travelers in August 2025. From August 1st to 4th, the Schwerin railway junction will be affected even before the route is completely closed due to necessary work on control and safety technology as well as software tests in the Schwerin signal box. The closure will take place daily from 9pm to 3am and will particularly affect commuters who travel frequently on weekends. This is reported by n-tv.
From August 1st, the route will be completely closed until April 30th, 2026. Travelers must expect extensive diversions and the use of replacement buses. The renovation is of great importance because the route is part of the trans-European transport network and plays a major role for both passenger and freight transport. But be careful: long-distance trains between Hamburg and Berlin require diversions via Uelzen and Stendal, while stops in Büchen, Ludwigslust and Wittenberge are omitted.
Concrete effects on local transport
There are also far-reaching changes for local transport. During the closures mentioned, some regional trains, such as the RB17 from Wismar via Schwerin to Ludwigslust, can travel to the Schwerin Süd stop. However, other connections, such as the special RE85 line between Schwerin main station and Bad Kleinen, have to be replaced by buses. The RB13 between Rehna and Plate will also be replaced by buses.
Marcel Drews, the chairman of Pro Bahn in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is critical of the situation. He describes the measures as uncoordinated and is surprised by the extensive replacement traffic right at the start of the general renovation. The passenger association recommends resorting to carpooling to mitigate the inconvenience. The additional buses deployed during the renovation will be equipped with Wi-Fi and power outlets to ensure travelers' convenience.
New information for travelers and commuters
The impact on traffic is significant as the diversion route only has one track, meaning the frequency of trains will have to change from 30 minutes to one departure per hour. The journey time will be extended by around 45 minutes on average. In addition, travelers from Hamburg to Rostock or Rügen can only travel via Lübeck and Bad Kleinen, which makes the entire travel planning more complicated.
For commuters from Schwerin, Hagenow or Büchen, it is necessary to change to buses to the Hamburg subway stations. The BC trains towards Dresden and Prague end or begin in Berlin. Nevertheless, care is taken to ensure that passengers have at least three direct long-distance trains daily between Hamburg and Rostock as well as other connections to other cities, even if some lines such as the IC line Warnemünde-Schwerin-Magdeburg-Leipzig are being shortened.
For travel planning, all information about connections and alternative offers is available in the electronic timetable information from Deutsche Bahn and the transport associations. Travelers are well advised to find out about the changes and diversions in good time in order to plan their route optimally.
The challenges of the upcoming construction work are great, but with good planning and a little flexibility the inconveniences can perhaps be mitigated a little.
