Tragedy in Güstrow: Little Fabian's murder case remains a mystery!
Entry numbers in crime statistics currently seem to reflect the pulse of the nation, but in Güstrow the community is in shock because of a tragic incident. About a month ago, eight-year-old Fabian was killed under dramatic circumstances. There is now initial progress in the investigation, which raises many questions.
The responsible authorities have arrested Fabian's father's 29-year-old ex-girlfriend. She is suspected of murder and is now in custody. Prosecutor Harald Nowack confirmed the arrest, but did not want to reveal any further information about her identity. This turn in the case is causing excitement among residents who are scrambling for answers.
The investigation is gaining momentum
What is spectacular is that several pieces of evidence were seized during searches in Reimershagen and Rum Kogel, including an off-road vehicle that is now being examined for forensic purposes. These searches were not directly related to the TV program “Aktenzeichen XY”, which was recently broadcast. Nevertheless, the broadcast caused increased interest in the case and brought the police 33 tips that now have to be evaluated.
Fabian was reported missing on October 10th after he failed to show up for school. Tragically, the police found his body in Klein Upahl, although investigators suspect that he was not killed there. According to the investigator, the crime occurred between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the day he disappeared, which makes the search for possible witnesses who were near the site at the time essential.
Reactions from the community
Güstrow's mayor Sascha Zimmermann has shown his gratitude to the investigating authorities and is demanding clear answers for the family and the entire community. Private pain is intensified by public grief, which Pastor Jens-Peter Schulz emphasized in his speech. The grief and the search for clarity about the circumstances of the murder are placing a heavy burden on the community.
But what are the murder statistics in Germany in general? According to Statista, 285 people were murdered in Germany in 2024, representing a slight decrease of 14 cases compared to the previous year. The nationwide murder rate is 0.9 cases per 100,000 residents. In an international comparison, Germany is well positioned - the murder rate is well below the global average.
Yet little Fabian's case remains a terrible outlier in our society. Murder is the most serious crime in German criminal law and is punishable by life imprisonment according to Section 211 of the Criminal Code. There is little room for mercy, and the murder clearance rate is remarkably high at around 98 percent. It remains to be hoped that Fabian's case will also be resolved soon in order to bring peace to the family and the community.
The investigation teams in Güstrow have made progress, but many questions still remain. The police are appealing to everyone who was near the site on October 10th or who may have observed something to come forward and help solve the case!
