Storm alert! Thunderstorms and heavy rain over Lower Saxony and SH!
A significant change in the weather is imminent in northern Germany and brings with it the forecast of thunderstorms and intense rainfall. According to that NDR A cold front moves from the west over Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The driver of this unpleasant weather situation is the depression “Isaac”, which brings moist and unstable air masses from the Mediterranean region. Graduate meteorologist Adrian Leyser from the German Weather Service (DWD) warns that this combination can lead to violent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
Especially in the Hanover region, meteorologists are expecting the first thunderstorm fronts late on Sunday evening, which will then move on to Bremen and Flensburg. The signs also point to severe weather in Schleswig-Holstein: Meteorologist Stefanie Scharping warns of thunderstorms and heavy rain, while weather warnings are issued in entire parts of the state.
Extensive weather warnings in Schleswig-Holstein
The DWD has already issued severe weather warnings for Schleswig-Holstein. Last Friday there was heavy rainfall in Neumünster and Norderstedt, which has already caused significant problems. The fire brigade was on a large scale in Neumünster as many emergency calls were received. Streets and cellars were flooded and the underpass at the train station had to be closed. Over 80 emergency services were required to deal with the situation.
In Norderstedt, the fire brigade experienced a state of emergency: many streets were knee-deep in water, and cellars and underground car parks were full. The consequences of these storms are still being felt and there is no end to the unsettled weather situation in sight. For the beginning of the week, the forecast will be characterized by a rainy Monday, with temperatures between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius and little of the mid-summer atmosphere.
Prospects for the coming days
With the change in the weather, a second storm front will move across Bavaria and Thuringia to southern Lower Saxony on Monday. Some improvement is expected in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from midday onwards, but heavy thunderstorms are still possible there. In some cases rainfall of up to 50 liters per square meter is possible, and perhaps even more. The clouds should clear up a bit on Tuesday, but occasional showers and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out.
The next period will be an uncomfortable mix of rain and thunderstorms. Residents are advised to be prepared for the following weather and take precautions if necessary to avoid unpleasant surprises. So stay connected to the current weather conditions and plan your activities accordingly so that you can get through this changeable time well!
