Traffic report at the end of the holiday: Traffic jams on the A1 and A7 – calm in sight!
Relaxed return traffic surprised drivers in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania at the weekend. Despite the end of the summer holidays in these federal states, the expected traffic on the A1, A7 and A23 motorways was not as chaotic as one might have feared. That's what he reports NDR.
A spokesman for the Hamburg traffic center stated that the traffic volume was normal. However, traffic jams and traffic jams occasionally had to be expected, especially on the A1 and A7. Additional delays were caused by construction sites and maintenance work, particularly on the Elbe Tunnel and the Norderel Bridge. The Köhlbrand Bridge was even completely closed at the weekend, which led to some diversions.
Holiday stress or relaxed return travel?
The first weekend in September is traditionally a time when many travelers return from vacation, this is particularly true in the federal states of Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein. In addition, five Austrian federal states, including Tyrol and Salzburg, have ended their holidays. The ADAC have pointed out an increased volume of traffic, but warns that traffic congestion is traditionally heaviest on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.
Despite the forecast traffic jams, the situation on the motorways was surprisingly relaxed. One reason for this could be the flexibility of many travelers who prefer to travel from Tuesday to Thursday. Even in neighboring countries, such as Austria, people did not rely on the weekend. There were also construction sites on important holiday routes, such as the Brenner motorway.
Construction sites and traffic calming
There are currently 1,258 construction sites active in Germany, which can lead to delays. In particular, on the A24 between Wittenburg and Zarrentin, the speed limit is 60 for 13 kilometers due to concrete maintenance measures, as “concrete cancer” was discovered there. The surface is scheduled to be replaced from mid-September.
Furthermore, the emergency lane had to be emphasized again and again in order to ensure quick access to accident scenes. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to 320 euros, which could at least bring some drivers to their senses.
The developments on the A7 in Hamburg, where expansion is also on the agenda, and information about them can be accessed at any time via the ADAC Maps. These not only provide real-time traffic flow, but also information about disruptions and construction sites in Germany and the surrounding area. This means you can always stay up to date during the return wave. So if you're into making arbitrary holiday travel decisions, you should definitely take a look at the traffic situation.
Overall, it can be seen that the drivers had a good hand this weekend and that the traffic problem was largely avoided due to the people returning from vacation. It was never forgotten to start the return journey with a pinch of humor and calmness, which is no disadvantage in these times!
