Trouble over southern port access: trucks stuck in Wolgast!

A lot is happening in Wolgast: The city is investing in improving the traffic structure in order to optimize accessibility to the Südhafen industrial area. The construction of the New Bahnhofstrasse is already underway and is intended to make access easier, especially for trucks and semi-trailers. The aim is to relieve pressure on the inner-city road network. However, there are difficulties with the approximately 150 meter long access road to the southern harbor, which is not sufficiently dimensioned for heavy goods traffic. Wolgast's mayor Martin Schröter describes the outstanding work as an “urgent project”.

As Ostsee-Zeitung reports, the conversion of the junction to the southern harbor was not included in the consideration process for the planned bypass taken into account. This creates further pressure, as commercial traffic, particularly the handling of goods and the arrival and departure of harvest vehicles, would benefit greatly from the expansion. In order to overcome these challenges, the city has already requested support from the Schwerin Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Progress on the bypass

But it's not just the access road that is the focus of the urban development plans. The new Wolgast bypass, which is currently under construction, is being implemented with the aim of reducing through traffic and thus increasing the quality of life of citizens. In reality, over 15,000 vehicles, buses and trucks drive through the city every day during the holiday season. The associated earthworks and bridge construction are quite complex, as [NDR](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/neue-ortsumgehung-von-wolgast- Nimm-langsam-form-an,ortsumgehungwolgast-100.html) reports.

Around 250,000 tonnes of sand and earth have to be moved, and the new bypass will be almost seven kilometers long. In total, costs of up to 287 million euros are planned for the road and bridge, although one must be prepared for possible price increases. There are already impressive trenches on Bahnhofstrasse that are up to twelve meters deep in order to advance the upcoming work. Drivers will certainly have to adapt to new traffic patterns and traffic jams in the near future.

The mobility transition as a long-term goal

Traffic planning in Wolgast falls into a larger context of national efforts to transform mobility. The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport emphasizes that cities and municipalities play a central role in this. The goals so far are promising: a move to environmentally friendly means of transport should be initiated. This not only contributes to the reduction of individual motorized transport, but also promotes the use of alternatives such as walking, cycling and public transport.

In this context, Wolgast can serve as an important example of sustainable urban and transport planning. The renovation measures planned there are not only an answer to the acute traffic problems, but also a step into the future. If the bypass works as planned, the people of Wolgast will soon be able to benefit from a noticeable improvement in their daily lives.
