Fireworks spark chaos: supermarket parking lot in Greifswald burns!

In the early morning of August 12, 2025, an unfortunate incident occurred in Greifswald. As the Picture According to reports, a fire was reported in the parking lot of a supermarket in Ernst-Thälmann-Ring around 3:20 a.m. Eyewitnesses observed thick smoke and flames rising from building rubble and Styrofoam panels on the site.

The fire department responded immediately and was fortunately able to quickly bring the flames under control. The police are currently assuming that fireworks were handled negligently, which could have started the fire. The damage caused is estimated at around 5,000 euros, an amount that is quite significant for a small company.

Suspects in custody

Two suspects, aged 18 and 33, were found on site. Both were apparently under the influence of alcohol, as a check showed: readings of 1.09 and 1.70 per mille. The investigation was taken over by the criminal investigation service because it involved property damage caused by fire.

Such incidents are not the exception: there have been similar fires in the region. So reported rbb24 about a supermarket fire in Blankenfelde-Mahlow that broke out on Friday last week. Fortunately, there were no injuries as the supermarket was closed at the time of the outbreak.

The investigation into the exact causes is still ongoing, we will keep you updated and hope that similar incidents can be avoided in the future. Safety should always come first!
