Am Park” special school moves to Loitz: More space for students!
Big changes are coming to the “Am Park” special school in Behrenhoff. The school is moving to Loitz to offer students better conditions. Loud Baltic Sea newspaper The move has been planned since 2016, but had to be postponed several times. The renovation work on the former elementary school in Loitz did not begin until 2024. Demolition and gutting work is currently underway at the old location on Wilhelm-Irrgang-Weg.
The investments in the new school amount to a total of eleven million euros, with the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania providing strong support with 5.1 million euros. The renovation is scheduled to be completed by early 2024 and will hopefully allow for a move in spring or summer 2026.
Improved learning conditions and capacities
The learning and working conditions in the new school are expected to improve significantly. The existing location in Behrenhoff is already bursting at the seams. The rooms are heavily worn out and capacity is exhausted. Last year, new containers were made available as temporary classrooms. These containers were urgently needed because the old modules had significant defects.
In Loitz, the new school will offer space for around 160 to 170 students, which means an increase of around 50 students compared to Behrenhoff. Headmaster Fred Lüpcke emphasizes that the new educational facility will optimally meet the needs of the students and the work of the school.
Expansion and challenges at other schools
Similar developments can also be observed at other schools, such as the special school at Knieberg in the Lüneburg district. The rooms there are also heavily overloaded. In the 2020/21 school year there were 204 students, and in the 2023/24 school year there were already 223 students - an increase that underlines the need for larger and better rooms. Loud Lüne blog An expansion to 25 classrooms is planned. The school authority is looking for solutions through new buildings or expansion measures.
As the school authority, the district is responsible for the school infrastructure and must plan and equip the schools according to the needs of the students. A feasibility study should clarify which variant offers the best economic opportunities.
School construction in the focus of education policy
School construction is a central issue for many federal states. Education server informs that the construction, renovation and modernization of schools is often the responsibility of the municipal or private school authorities. The states provide guidelines and support with funding programs.
In many regions of Germany, an increase in student numbers is expected in the coming years, which will require additional investment in school infrastructure. The goal is clear: the learning environments should be optimized for all students in order to provide the best educational opportunities.
