State election 2026: SPD and CDU nominate their candidates in MV!
The countdown to the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on September 20, 2026 is on! The two parties SPD and CDU are currently preparing intensively for this important date. Loud NDR Both parties have chosen their candidates for a total of 36 constituencies. Interestingly, the lists in the run-up to the election show a surplus of male candidates, while women's breaks show that diversity in politics can still be improved.
In the last election in 2021, the SPD won in 34 of the 36 constituencies, which further increases expectations for the new nomination. The focus is particularly on Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus, who achieved the best result in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district with an impressive 51.5 percent. On the other hand, Heiko Miraß found the worst result on Rügen with only 27.8 percent.
Composition of candidates
In the last election, the CDU only had a direct mandate, which Harry Glawe was able to win in constituency 36. In this context, six of the 34 SPD MPs are quitting, including four men and two women. What is particularly noteworthy is that Dietmar Northoff, at 73, is the oldest SPD MP, while Nils Saemann did not give a speech in this legislative period due to health problems.
Two women from the CDU, Beate Schlupp and Christiane Berg, have announced their withdrawal. In addition, the Christian Democrats have nominated 25 newcomers who have not yet held a state parliament mandate, but are all active in local politics. Holger Klieme, who was already in the state parliament until 2021, is one of the well-known figures among the new candidates.
Proportion of women and age structure
The proportion of women in the current state parliament is 36.7%, which corresponds to 29 out of 79 representatives. Among the new constituency candidates, the CDU has 12 women (33.3%), while the SPD is doing slightly better with 14 women (38.9%). The oldest SPD candidate is Till Backhaus at 67, followed by the youngest, Michel-Friedrich Schiefler, who is 30 years old. Harry Glawe leads the CDU at 72 years old, while Karoline Herrmann is the youngest candidate at 35 years old.
The two party leaders, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) and CDU state leader Daniel Peters, have also been nominated for their constituencies. Official top candidates will be chosen next year in order to mobilize voters as best as possible.
The political landscape in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is therefore in flux. The next few months will be exciting because all eyes are on the new faces who want to move into the state parliament. There is still a lot to do before the election!
