New hiking trail in Eldena: nature experience at Greifswalder Bodden!
There is exciting news for nature and hiking lovers in Greifswald: the city politicians have unanimously decided to build a new hiking trail on the water in Eldena. This should not only increase the city's tourist attractiveness, but also offer a view of the attractive surroundings. The planned path, which is 2.6 kilometers long, will lead along the old dike on Greifswalder Bodden and begins behind the popular lido in Eldena. It ends in Friedrichshagen and offers breathtaking views of the Danish Wiek, reports the Ostsee-Zeitung.
The project also includes a viewing tower that is three meters high and will include a rest area with seating in Friedrichshagen. In addition, a new bathing area will be created, which will be equipped with a fence to protect the adjacent natural areas. This is particularly important as the trail is designed for pedestrians only to minimize disruption to the nearby bird sanctuary. To ensure barrier-free accessibility, the path will be widened in some places. Two bridges are also planned that will lead over water and mossy areas, ensuring a seamless natural experience.
Project financing and construction time
The total project costs amount to around 750,000 euros, with the city of Greifswald only covering 10% of the costs. The majority of the financing – 90% – comes from KfW Bank. The construction period is scheduled to last from March 2026 to December 2026. The main committee approved the project with a clear majority, which illustrates the common will of city politicians to improve the hiking infrastructure in Greifswald.
