Rügenbrücken Marathon: Danger of traffic jams and record participants cause excitement!
Next Saturday, October 10, 2025, the Rügen Bridge in Stralsund will be dedicated to the Rügen Bridge Marathon. Around 6,300 runners will take to the route, which represents a new registration record. This year, over 1,000 more participants have registered than last year, and the anticipation for this sporting event is palpable. However, as NDR reports, the bridge will be completely closed for several hours, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The diversion for traffic is via the old Rügendamm, and a speed limit of 30 km/h also applies to the alternative route via the Ziegelgraben Bridge. This is particularly important as previously the speed had to be reduced to just 10 km/h due to damage to the bridge flap. To further aggravate the situation, the State Office for Road Construction and Transport has identified technical problems on the Ziegelgraben Bridge. Although faulty parts have already been removed and are to be remanufactured, passage for commercial and recreational boating remains restricted until the repairs are complete.
Competitions and disciplines
The Rügenbrücken Marathon has established itself as a popular event and offers a variety of disciplines. The most popular competitions include the six-kilometer walk, the ten-kilometer run and the half marathon. The enthusiastic audience can look forward to an exciting event that attracts not only professional runners, but also amateur athletes and families. As n-tv adds, drivers who want to travel have to allow a little more time to get to the island of Rügen.
The ferry between Stahlbrode and Glewitz is available as an alternative crossing and runs every 40 minutes, weather permitting. While preparations for the marathon are in full swing, the partially closed Ziegelgraben Bridge means that the journey presents additional challenges for some participants.
