Serious accident near Rubenow: driver's life in danger!

On Tuesday afternoon there was a tragic traffic accident on district road 22 between Wusterhusen and Rubenow that cost two people their lives. As the Ostsee-Zeitung reports, a failed overtaking maneuver led to a dramatic collision. A van that was about to turn hit two overtaking cars. As a result, one of the cars ended up in a ditch, while the other crashed head-on into a tree. Tragically, a 39-year-old firefighter and his 11-year-old son were in the vehicle that struck the tree. Both were seriously injured and had to be rescued by the fire department. Despite all efforts, they died at the scene of the accident.

Fortunately, the driver of the van and the 29-year-old driver of the other car were uninjured. The accident site was closed until the early hours of the next morning for clean-up and investigation work. A crisis intervention team was set up to support the relatives of the deceased during this difficult time.

Another serious accident

Just one day later, on Wednesday, there was another serious accident on the K22 near Rubenow. A 61-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree. The police have not yet been able to determine a clear cause of this accident. The man was trapped and was initially unresponsive before volunteer fire departments rescued him from several surrounding towns. In this case too, the seriously injured person was taken to the University Hospital in Greifswald. The K22 remained completely closed for almost two hours while the accident was being recorded, and the amount of damage is over 20,000 euros.

Unfortunately, such terrible incidents have not become rare in recent years. Statistics from Germany show that well over 2.5 million traffic accidents were registered in 2024, with the number of accidents resulting in personal injuries remaining at a consistently high level. Vision Zero, a goal set by EU transport ministers, aims to have zero traffic fatalities by 2050. Despite these advances, human factors such as inattention and recklessness remain common causes of such tragedies.

The accidents on the K22 clearly illustrate how important it is to drive carefully and keep an appropriate distance. In this way, all road users contribute to minimizing the risk of further serious accidents.
