Animal welfare scandal in Ferdinandshof: thirsty animals in need rescued!
In Ferdinandshof, a suspected animal abuser has recently attracted the attention of the authorities. Several animals, including pigs and rabbits, were taken away from the animal owner because of serious animal welfare violations. According to a report by SVZ The animals were relocated by the veterinary office on July 12th after animal rights activists had already pointed out the alarming situation at the beginning of June.
Nele Hartleben, spokeswoman for the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, described the measure as a “substitute measure” in which the authority takes over the care of the animals. There are currently two proceedings against the owner for violations of animal protection law. The rescued pigs and rabbits found shelter on a farm in Wietstock, where they appeared thirsty and exhausted immediately upon arrival - they quickly retreated to the stable.
Incredible water intake and worry about more animals
The animals showed unusual behavior as they drank an unusually large amount of water. These observations were shared by the animal protection association, which denounced the negligent keeping of the animals. Unfortunately, the whereabouts of other animals such as sheep, ducks and chickens remain unclear. Some of the animals were reportedly either sold or abandoned before authorities intervened.
In Germany, the legal regulations on animal protection are clear, but often revolve around serious injuries to animals. The Animal Welfare Act stipulates that animals are considered fellow creatures who feel pain and suffering. Ultimately, every avoidable experience of pain must be avoided for no good reason. Injuries to animals can be punished under the Animal Protection Act as well as damage to property. In case of suspicion, citizens cannot file a lawsuit on behalf of the animals, which is considered a weak point within the legal framework.
The importance of animal welfare and protection
The topic of animal welfare is controversially discussed in many areas in Germany. The demands for more transparency and better conditions are particularly important in livestock farming and egg production. The Farm Animal Welfare Council's Five Freedoms summarize what animal welfare means: freedom from hunger, from pain, from husbandry-related discomfort and more. Animal welfare measures are essential to ensure these standards.
Animal welfare also has an economic aspect; Around 8.3 percent of private donations currently flow into this area. Many consumers also want to ensure that their food is produced in an animal-friendly manner. In the most recent survey, 50 percent of respondents said they were willing to pay more for products that meet animal welfare standards. Statista notes that the focus on animal welfare has grown in recent years, and support for animal-friendly practices has become more important.
In this difficult situation, the Lebenshof in Wietstock is asking for donations in order to maintain animal protection work not only for the rescued animals, but also for future emergencies. Commitment to animals remains an important concern, especially in times when more and more people are becoming aware of the welfare of animals.
