Torgelow: Tragic truck accident claims the life of a 61-year-old

On Wednesday morning, August 13, 2025, a tragic accident occurred on State Road 32 between Torgelow and Hammer, which cost the life of a 61-year-old driver. Like the Ostsee-Zeitung reported, the woman was driving in the direction of Hammer when, for reasons that are still unclear, she crossed into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a truck and trailer. The collision was so violent that the BMW was thrown off the road and the truck began to lurch, eventually ending up in the ditch and the trailer lying across the road.

The force of the impact was devastating: the 61-year-old suffered such serious injuries that she died at the scene of the accident. The 56-year-old truck driver, who luckily remained uninjured unlike the car driver, was able to leave the scene of the accident unscathed. Police, an emergency chaplain, an accident expert from Dekra and several fire departments were on duty to carry out the rescue. The state road remained completely closed during this critical phase and the damage is estimated at at least 135,000 euros. The police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.

Another violent head-on collision

There was another fatal traffic accident shortly before at another location in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. On Monday evening there was a head-on collision between Torgelow and Liepgarten, in which an 18-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle while making a right turn and drove into oncoming traffic. According to the Nordkurier reported, there was a collision with an oncoming car, which overturned and landed on its roof. The 21-year-old driver of the other vehicle and his 18-year-old passenger were rescued with injuries, while the 18-year-old who caused the accident could only be rescued dead.

Both accidents cast a worrying light on road safety in the region. The federal traffic accident statistics shows that such tragic incidents are not uncommon. With the aim of obtaining reliable data on the road safety situation, the results are important not only for legislation, but also for traffic education and road construction. It remains to be seen what measures will now be taken to increase safety on the roads and prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
