Bird flu strikes again: exclusion zone around chicken fattening facility in Treuen!
In a worrying development for the poultry industry in Western Pomerania-Greifswald, the third case of avian influenza was reported in the region on November 3, 2025. A large chicken fattening facility in Sassen-Trantow, which has around 28,000 animals, is affected. Due to the official confirmation of the virus, the entire herd had to be killed in order to contain the spread of the disease. The responsible authorities reacted quickly and set up new protection and surveillance zones to prevent further spread, reports the Nordkurier.
The protective measures include a restricted area with a radius of at least three kilometers around the source of the outbreak. This includes parts of Mühlenkamp, Sassen, Zarrentin, Gülzowshof, Schwinge and Vorbein. Within this zone there is an obligation to keep poultry, with the exception of pigeons. In addition, the monitoring zone extends for around ten kilometers around the affected company and extends to just before Greifswald.
Implementation of protective measures
The obligation to keep animals in stables is not only enforced in the immediate vicinity of the outbreak, but also for owners with more than 5,000 animals throughout the entire district. This is particularly true for endangered poultry farms near bodies of water. Owners are urged to contact the veterinary office immediately if illnesses are suspected and to report the number of birds kept as well as their type of use and location. Poultry exhibitions and markets are currently prohibited in the protection and surveillance zone.
Insights into poultry farming in the region show that many farms must rely on precise documentation and appropriate protective measures in order to minimize possible losses due to the disease. These new regulations are necessary to ensure the health of the animals and the economic stability of the companies.
Review of development
Avian influenza is a serious issue that has not only economic but also health implications for the entire region. The first appearance of this virus has been putting pressure on poultry farmers for some time and is forcing them to continually rethink and continually adapt their strategies.
The situation has alarmed the authorities and breeders and shows that precautionary measures are essential in the agricultural sector. It therefore remains to be seen what further steps will be taken to stabilize poultry farming in the region. Given the repeated outbreaks, it is now more important than ever to monitor and respond to developments with a watchful eye.
