60 years of Sound Swimming: A celebration for swimmers and spectators in Stralsund!

The Sound Swimming will be a very special event this year: On July 5, 2025, participants and spectators will celebrate the 60th anniversary of this traditional open water swimming event. This Saturday, over 1,100 swimmers are expected in Strelasund to complete the approximately 2.3 kilometer route from Altefähr on the island of Rügen to Stralsund. The waterways and shipping administration has already asked for increased attention in the fairway, because safety first is the motto here.

For several decades, this event has attracted not only amateur athletes but also experienced open water swimmers. “It is open to all ages and abilities,” says Yacht.de out. The impressive backdrop of the old town of Stralsund, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also contributes to the special atmosphere of this maritime event. Anyone who would like to experience the historic city and the maritime flair of the harbor has the perfect opportunity to do so on the day of the event.

Participants and security

Registration for the anniversary sun swim started in January 2025 and was quickly booked up. However, if you couldn't get a spot, you have the chance to get on the waiting list. There are still places available for children's swimming, which also takes place in Stralsund. The safety of the participants has the highest priority. That's why lifeguards, medical staff and boat crews are on site to be able to intervene at any time if something goes wrong.

As well as Müritzquerung.de as well as Teamdeutschland.de emphasize that open water swimming is a swimming discipline that has become increasingly popular in recent years. The first Olympic participation took place in Athens in 1896, but the discipline in its current form has been part of the Olympic Games since 2008. This shows how important and popular open water swimming has become.
