Bernstein Resort: opening postponed to 2029 – what now?

There is still a lot going on in the idyllic area of the Pütnitz peninsula. But the calendar entries for those responsible at the Bernstein holiday resort are not really positive for the next few years. As the Ostseezeitung reported, the planning and construction of the resort will probably take several years. The earliest date for the granting of building permission is set for the end of 2026, but the opening is not expected until the end of 2029.

With an impressive investment volume of 350 million euros, the project is one of the largest tourism projects in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Only around a quarter of the funding has been accessed so far, which underlines the urgency of further planning. The city of Ribnitz-Damgarten, which is behind the project, is planning not only a Center Parcs but also an innovative concept that includes a sports and adventure world called “Pangea Island”.

Delays and challenges

The creation of a legally binding development plan should be completed by the end of 2025, and citizens' comments will also be incorporated into the planning. The original plan was to obtain building permission for 2023, but the process is dragging on due to nature conservation regulations and the need to clear up contaminated sites.

The work is currently on hold due to the vegetation phase. However, new opportunities could arise from October onwards. The entire area on the peninsula is actually supposed to cover 250 hectares, but the enormous delays mean that Center Parcs is now targeting its opening for 2028. Speculation that another location could be sought if there are further delays is making the rounds in the scene.

Citizens' decision and local opinions

In this context, a recent survey of 851 residents of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows that awareness of the importance of tourism has increased. The Results of the survey show that the acceptance of tourism in the region is experiencing positive growth. Many citizens feel strongly connected to their place of residence and appreciate the influence of tourism on the quality of life.

Nevertheless, there are also critical voices that warn about the possible negative effects of mass tourism. The citizens' initiative “No mass tourism on Pütnitz” raises particular concerns about traffic problems and is committed to finding a balance between the economy and preserving the natural beauty of the region.
