Motorcyclist has a fatal accident: police are looking for witnesses to the accident!

A tragic traffic accident occurred on June 13, 2025 on the K12 between Perdöhl and Wittenburg. A 60-year-old motorcyclist, who was part of a column of four motorcycles, lost control of his vehicle and left the road. As a result, he collided with a street tree. Despite immediate resuscitation attempts by first aiders on site, the emergency doctor could only determine that the man was dead. The accident occurred around 8:18 p.m. and caused a temporary full closure of K12 that lasted about four hours, reports City report.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are currently underway and police have launched an appeal for witnesses. The road had to be closed for the investigation and clean-up work while the fire and rescue services were on duty. The material damage is estimated at around 5,000 euros, and the motorcycle in question is no longer roadworthy and was recovered by a towing service.

Accident numbers and safety for cyclists

The tragic incident highlights the safety of cyclists in Germany. According to an analysis by insurers' accident research (UDV), there were 189 cyclists killed and 2,996 seriously injured on country roads in 2023, which account for a significant proportion of serious accidents. These numbers have stagnated at a high level since 2018; In 2020 and 2022 alone, there was a temporary decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study identifies accident-prone traffic facilities and recommends measures to improve traffic safety for cyclists. Junctions are particularly dangerous, where around 68 percent of serious accidents occur. Many fatal accidents are often caused by cyclists themselves, often due to a lack of safety measures. A lack of cycle paths and visibility contribute to this situation, says UDV firmly.

At this point it becomes clear that older road users in particular are particularly often involved in serious accidents. The recommendation to offer driving training for cyclists could help to increase safety and minimize the risk of accidents. In addition, there is an urgent need to raise awareness among all road users through targeted campaigns.

Traffic accident statistics as a basis for measures

The importance of traffic accident statistics cannot be overstated. This data forms the basis for measures in legislation, traffic education and road construction. The statistics records comprehensive information about accidents, those involved and the vehicles involved, as well as the causes of the accident. The information collected not only helps to understand accident events, but also to enable accident risk comparisons across different modes of transport. This is crucial for safer infrastructure and transport policy.

The tragic accident on K12 should make us all think about safety on our roads and take steps to prevent future accidents. Tell us your opinion – what measures do you think are necessary to increase safety in traffic areas?
