A tragic incident has occurred in Dranske, a district of Stralsund, which is causing excitement and consternation. On July 9, 2025, a body was found in a new building, discovered by neighbors who reported an unbearable stench in the building. They felt compelled to contact the landlord to report the alarming smells. The new building, which once housed 4,000 soldiers and their families, is now largely used as holiday accommodation.
The first police officers to arrive at the scene were two officers from Sassnitz. They found the body on the fifth floor, and the shocking circumstances of the discovery sparked the police investigation. At first they tried to get a doctor to confirm death, but this was unsuccessful. Entry into the apartment revealed a devastated scene: liquor bottles and old newspapers were scattered, and the body of the 51-year-old tenant was partially visible on a bed in the small room.
Investigations into identity and cause of death
The identity of the deceased still needs to be confirmed through a DNA comparison with a first-degree relative. The circumstances are challenging for investigators: While there are no signs of crime, traces of feces and blood indicate a possible death struggle. The tenant's wife has an alibi as she was in custody at the time of the incident.
The undertakers who came to the spot to collect the lifeless body used “scent bombs” to neutralize the unbearable smell of decomposition. The entire apartment was sealed and the criminal investigation service ended, but the paperwork is still pending. The incident has not only worried neighbors, but also raised questions about the living conditions of the tenant, who only moved into the apartment in November and previously lived in Bulgaria.
