New speed limit in Pantelitz: Drivers are frustrated!

There are new rules for Pantelitz drivers that, at first glance, could be a relief. The lower traffic authority in the Vorpommern-Rügen district administration recently introduced a new speed limit for the federal highway 105. There is now a speed limit of 60 km/h in the through-town area, which was previously 70 km/h. Outside the town, vehicles are still allowed to drive at 80 km/h Baltic Sea newspaper reported.

Mayor Fred Schulz-Weingarten sees the new regulations and the traffic light set up as progress for the traffic situation in Pantelitz. In particular, the newly built turning lane at the Pütte junction is intended to promote traffic flow. The entire B 105 between Martensdorf and Stralsund was also declared an 80 km/h zone; Previously there was a limit of 100 km/h. The background to this decision is the desire to minimize frequent speed changes. Drivers only have to reduce their speed in the center of Pantelitz.

Changes in Negast

As luck would have it, transport policy in the district also shows other sides. In Negast, the 70 km/h zone was surprisingly abolished without any prior notice. Residents and drivers are irritated by this sudden change. Instead, there is now a speed limit of 50 km/h, which is made communicative by measuring boards. The rationale for the change remains unclear, and there was no response to queries on the matter. Thomas Scheibe, the responsible road manager, would have liked to keep the 70 km/h zone.

Further changes are also pending on the state road between Müggenhall and Richtenberg: a speed limit of 80 km/h is being prepared here. Such measures are part of the traffic rules that are set out in Germany by the road traffic regulations. This regulates a total of 53 paragraphs on speed limits, which can vary depending on the road, vehicle type and other conditions, according to information from Catalog of fines.

The legal background

The general rule in Germany is: 50 km/h is the standard speed for all vehicles in urban areas. Depending on the weight of the vehicle, a maximum speed of 100 km/h may be permitted outside of town. There are also special regulations on motorways where there is no general speed limit for cars up to 3.5 t, unless they are set by traffic signs. The recommended speed here is 130 km/h.

A look at the sanctions shows that the penalties for speeding are not to be neglected. In the city, for example, going 10 km/h over the limit will result in a fine of €30, while exceeding the limit by more than 70 km/h can cost up to €800. There is also a risk of driving bans for certain speed violations.

Overall, it remains to be seen how the new speed limits will affect traffic behavior in the region. Some see the changes as improvements, while others are surprised at the sudden restrictions. What is certain is that transport policy is constantly changing - and not just in Pantelitz and Negast.
