Cyclists stop train on Rügen: Danger in the track area!

A remarkable incident occurred on June 13, 2025 on the railway line between Sassnitz and Lietzow in the Vorpommern-Rügen district. Two cyclists, a 62-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man, were on the tracks and stopped a regional train to ask the driver for directions. What they didn't seem to realize was how dangerous their behavior was. The train had to apply emergency braking to prevent anything worse from happening, and four trains suffered delays as a result of this incident. The federal police were alerted and initiated criminal proceedings against the cyclists for dangerous interference with rail traffic, so the situation was not without consequences.

The police officers sound the alarm and warn urgently about the risks that arise from remaining in the track area. As bahnblogstelle.com reports, entering the track area is simply forbidden, but tragic accidents still happen again and again. Ignorance, carelessness or wrong behavior are often the main causes. A frightening example is the recent accident involving a 16-year-old in Teutschenthal, who was running along the tracks with headphones on while listening to music and was hit by a train.

Education and prevention

The federal police and the railway companies are relying on clarification. They have been working intensively together since 2000 to increase security. Citizens are invited to report information about vandalism or unauthorized entry to railway facilities. The police also point out this in view of the legal regulations: Any stay in track areas is not permitted and can be punished as dangerous interference with rail traffic. This law imposes penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment of up to ten years.

The incident on Rügen clearly shows how important it is to take the dangers in the railway sector seriously. It often happens that people end up close to the tracks due to carelessness, which is also discussed in the DGUV recommendations for track construction work. Inadequate labeling and a lack of protective strips can have fatal consequences. When working on the track, it must be ensured that all safety instructions are followed to avoid accidents.

Maybe now is a good time to think about the importance of following the rules and taking extra care when traveling near railway tracks. In the end, safety counts for everyone - this also applies to the cyclists on Rügen, who can quickly find themselves in a dangerous situation due to carelessness.
