Rügen's new cuisine: Berliner takes over family restaurant and finds love!

In the picturesque village of Göhren on Bahnhofsstrasse, right next to the Rügensche Bäderbahn station, a remarkable generational change has taken place in the popular restaurant “Die Räucherei”. Steven Weiß, a 21-year-old from Berlin, took over the gastronomic business in 2025 after his grandparents burned out, which has been run by Ilona and Andreas Ebert in the third generation since 2000. His return to the island of Rügen, where he had worked as a waiter in a restaurant as a child, is not only a new beginning in his career, but also a love story that he shares with his wife Juliane.

The young restaurateur's decision to abandon his training in Berlin seemed brave at first, but it quickly turned out to be the right choice. Under his leadership, the restaurant experienced not only a resurgence, but also a food revolution. One of the main changes was the adjustment of the recipe for the popular fish burgers—they are now made from 100 percent herring, making the previous meat ingredients a thing of the past. In doing so, he not only maintained the classic tradition of the house, but also responded to the wishes of his guests.

Popular specialties and awards

The gastronomic success speaks for itself: “The Smokehouse” offers a variety of specialties that delight both locals and tourists. From homemade fish dumplings to the popular red and white fish soup to solyanka - the dishes have won several awards at the Mönchgut Hering Festival. In addition, up to 100 kg of fish are smoked every day during the summer months, which underlines the culinary quality of the house. An impressive 40 tons of fish are processed every year, including exquisite varieties such as stremella salmon, halibut, eel and redfish.

The smokehouse has space for up to 200 guests and also offers non-fish dishes, meaning there is something for every taste. With a dedicated team of 25 employees, including long-time employee Antje Kauss, the restaurant is ideally positioned.

Unique online service

Especially during the Corona period, Steven established an online shop through which the delicatessen specialties can be ordered. Manufactured under strict controls, the products are sealed airtight after smoking and deep-frozen in special shock freezers. Shipping takes place within 24 hours with DPD, and the careful packaging ensures that the delicious products stay frozen for up to three days. The recommendation here is: Orders for the weekend should be placed by Wednesday in order to enjoy fresh delicacies in good time.

“The smokehouse” not only stands for a culinary experience, but also for the possibility of a fourth-generation family business. Because Steven and his wife Juliane, who applied to be a waitress in 2015, are a well-rehearsed team that also harmonizes in their private lives - their wedding at Ranzow Castle two years earlier remains unforgettable and shows how strong the bonds between family, tradition and modern gastronomy can be.

“The Räucherei” is not only a place of enjoyment, but also a story of return, new beginnings and love - a real piece of Rügen that you shouldn't miss. If you would like to find out more, you can browse the offers in Die Räucherei's online shop.
