Refurbishment of the ferry bridge in Stralsund: Start of construction for 440,000 euros!

In Stralsund, there is currently a lot of tackling: On July 1st and 2nd, 2025, the dismantling of a dilapidated bridge was part of the ferry bridge. The condition of the bridge is anything but rosy - at the last main exam in 2020 there was an insufficient rating of 3.5, while the firm part of the bridge received a grade 2.7. That makes it clear: as soon as possible, it has to be renovated! As Ostsee-Zeitung reports. Tons of weight now dismantled to make room for the necessary renovation work.

The great crane that was opened for this action has their hands full. The 17 -meter -long bridge part had to be placed on a low loader, which required an hour of intensive work. The street 'Am Fähr Canal' will be closed to the parking lot on both days during the mining, so that pedestrians and cyclists have to reschedule. The detour is about 100 meters.

urgent renovation measures

The planned renovation work is by no means trivial - they include the corrosion protection of the supporting structure, the renewal of the railing and the overhaul of the hydraulic system and the electrical systems. So that the bridge will be safe for pedestrians and cyclists in the future, the drain warehouse and the components of the control and control technology will also be renewed. The total costs for the renovation amount to around 440,000 euros, and the work should be completed by the end of November.

A look into the past reveals that this bridge has a long history: the original constructions were inaugurated as early as 1865. After damage in the Second World War, the bridge was demolished in 1972 and finally replaced by a new bridge in 1994, which can now hope for this comprehensive renovation. So the ferry bridge not only confronts us with its broken wood and steel parts, but also with the need to be invested in order to improve our infrastructure.

a larger context

The Situation in Stralsund is not unique. In general, there are around 10,000 bridges on the renovation list in Germany, such as Tagesschau. The economic damage caused by the renovation backlog is significant. In view of the grievances, Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing has called a "bridge summit" to develop a package of measures to accelerate bridge renovations. The concerns about poor infrastructure run through the whole country.

So it remains to be hoped that the ferry bridge in Stralsund will soon be not only safe to cross again, but also also serves as an example of the necessary structural change in the infrastructure in Germany. The urgent extent of renovation needs of bridges could quickly become a big problem for the future. Our traffic safety remains - after all, the bridge should not only arouse nostalgia, but also lead to the future.
