Stralsund opens new after-school care center – a dream for 240 children comes true!

A new after-school care center for the Juri Gagarin primary school was ceremoniously inaugurated in Stralsund. Daniel Pech, the mayor, and Jens Brauer, managing director of the North-East Workers' Samaritan Association, described the opening as a big step for the city. This new after-school care center aims to create a loving and supportive environment for 240 children. 180 children are currently finding a new home here, and the after-school care center will be a sensational 1,870 square meters in size. The building consisted of 54 modular elements, which were realized using wooden modular construction, which also has positive ecological aspects, says Brauer. NDR reports.

Construction work on the new after-school building began in May 2024 and is expected to be completed in November 2024. The assembly of the pre-produced wooden modules progressed quickly: the majority of the construction was completed within just five days. “A dream has come true,” said Jens Brauer at the opening. The construction costs total 5.3 million euros, with 4.1 million euros being borne by the city of Stralsund and the rest by the federal government. It also shows that the wooden modular construction enables a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 102% compared to conventional construction. Building with wood brings the advantages of resource conservation and a significant reduction in the ecological footprint.

Modular construction as a future solution

Modular construction has established itself as a flexible solution for educational institutions in recent years. It enables quick and sustainable projects that can often be implemented without affecting ongoing school operations. “This is exactly where the innovative wooden modular construction comes into play,” explains a B+L representative. Thanks to prefabrication, modern school buildings can be built in a short time and adapted to the respective needs. B+L highlights that this approach is not only suitable for new buildings, but also for extensions and temporary solutions. This makes modular construction a popular concept today.

The new after-school care center at the Juri Gagarin Elementary School not only offers the future generation an attractive space, but also makes a statement for environmentally conscious building. The entire concept reflects the need for modern and flexible educational spaces that create a positive environment for both children and carers.
