Tourism in MV: Mood is falling despite stable overnight stay numbers!

In northeastern Germany, the mood in tourism is tense. The current situation is characterized by a certain consumer reluctance, as nordkurier.de reports. Lars Schwarz, President of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, confirms the worrying results of the latest tourism business survey, in which around 600 companies took part.

Although overnight stay numbers in the north are comparable to those before the pandemic, the general mood in the travel industry remains tense. The business climate index in the hospitality industry fell to 88 points from 89 points in spring 2024, while the index in the travel industry fell from 111 to 107 points. The economic climate index ranges from 0 (poor) to 200 points (very good).

Companies complain about high costs, uncertain conditions and an acute shortage of staff, which makes sustainable business increasingly difficult. Around 70 percent of companies in the hospitality industry rate their situation as good or satisfactory, while 30 percent are dissatisfied. The concerns are clear: 84 percent see labor costs as the biggest burden, followed by energy, food and raw material prices, which 72 and 60 percent of respondents see as a risk, respectively.

The look ahead

The companies are divided in view of the slightly improved future prospects. 16 percent expect a more favorable development, while 33 percent fear a less favorable development. These uncertainties are also noticeable in international travel, as the geopolitical situation and crises are putting a damper on travel options.

In order to overcome the challenges, more flexible working hours and a corporate tax reform are required. The industry remains in an area of tension between overnight stay numbers, which are stabilizing, and a mixed business situation that does not contribute to any relief.
