Deflagration in Baabe: Clinic evacuated – three employees injured!

This morning, around 9:30 a.m., a frightening incident occurred in the mother-child clinic in Baabe on the island of Rügen. A deflagration in the kitchen resulted in heavy smoke, alarming both patients and staff. Fortunately, the incident remained minor as only three kitchen staff suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The members of the clinic breathed a sigh of relief because there were no serious injuries to complain about.

The rapid action of the emergency services was crucial: around 100 firefighters from the surrounding towns of Baabe, Sellin, Göhren, Lancken-Granitz and Middelhagen were alerted. Two emergency doctors and 20 rescue workers from the “Rapid Response Group Rescue” were also on site to ensure that the highest medical standards could be maintained. The Norddeutsche Rundschau emphasizes that no one was seriously endangered and the fire department was able to quickly give the all-clear as no open fire had broken out.

Evacuation and emergency management

The entire clinic was evacuated as a precaution, which is of utmost importance in such a situation. As Secure Hospital notes, hospitals must be particularly well prepared for such events. With a high proportion of patients who may have limited mobility, evacuation often becomes a real challenge. In this case, however, the emergency services managed to get all patients and employees out of the danger zone unharmed.

The clinic was able to be re-entered after about two hours and operations continued quickly. This shows how important structured emergency plans are. Although such incidents are rare, healthcare emergency management is critical. The protection of employees and patients is always our top priority.

The police are currently investigating the exact cause of the deflagration. It remains to be seen whether technical failure or human error caused the incident. One thing is certain, however: the quick and coordinated response of all emergency services prevented anything worse from happening and showed that the right measures can be taken in an emergency.
