Warnemünder Week: Athletes celebrate success despite stormy weather!
During the 87th Warnemünde Week, which took place from July 5th to 13th, the coast was transformed into a sporting Eldorado. Around 800 athletes met on the water, while 580 boats from 38 nations fought for fame and honor in eleven competitions. Despite sometimes stormy weather conditions, the event was a complete success.
Sports director Peter Ramcke and his dedicated organizational team had their hands full creating a varied program for the participants. From the sunny start to the stormy gusts and heavy showers, the weather conditions were a reminder that the sea demands respect. “We even had to move the races to eastern courses,” explained Ramcke, who praised the team’s flexibility in constantly responding to the sailors’ requirements and the weather. Despite the challenges, 300 starters in the Ilca classes were able to successfully complete all planned races.
Conditions suitable for the Olympics
Mona Küppers, the President of the German Sailing Association (DSV), was also there and did not shy away from praising the newly created infrastructure. “The short distances make it easy for participants to find their way around,” she explained. In addition, Küppers sees the chances of a possible Olympic bid for Germany, both in Warnemünde and in Kiel, as promising. “The suitability of our location for Olympic competitions is beyond question,” continued Küppers.
The participants came from 38 nations, 13 of which won medals. In addition to the exciting competitions, the accompanying land program also provided entertainment. Matthias Fromm, Tourism Director Rostock & Warnemünde, spoke of a “good hand” in selecting the new highlights, which included the Glashäger beach concerts with around 5,000 visitors.
An anniversary in sight
The next Warnemünde Week will take place in 2026 and will also mark the 100th anniversary of the event. Peter Ramcke is optimistic about the future: "It was a great week that exceeded all expectations. We are already looking forward to the next edition!"
Finally, at a thank you party, the three long-standing employees of Warnemünder Woche were thanked for their tireless efforts and bid farewell to their well-deserved retirement. The successes so far are already casting a shadow over next year, when the 88th Warnemünde Week takes place from July 4th to 12th, 2026.
