Two houses burn in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Fire brigade on duty!
On Friday evening, November 1st, 2025, the fire department was called to a dramatic operation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On Elisabethstrasse in Güstrow, Rostock district, a fire broke out around 7 p.m. in a single-family home that was already fully ablaze when emergency services arrived. The 87-year-old resident had previously lit a candle and briefly left the room. Unfortunately he suffered smoke inhalation and had to be taken to hospital. Tragically, the building is no longer habitable and the damage is estimated at around 200,000 euros. The police have opened an investigation on suspicion of negligent arson. This reports NDR.
But that wasn't the only fire of the evening. About two hours later, another fire was reported in a single-family home in Anklam, Vorpommer-Greifswald district. The fire broke out on the upper floor, but was quickly extinguished by the Anklam fire department. Fortunately, no one was injured as the residents were able to leave the house in time. Here too, the material damage is estimated at around 200,000 euros. The Anklam criminal police have also started investigating the cause of the fire.
Damage caused by fire
In total, the damage caused by the two fires amounts to around 400,000 euros. The incidents shed light on the dangers posed by open flames and improper handling of candles. Particular caution is required during the cold months when people increasingly light candles.
Safety comes first
To avoid accidents, simple safety measures can be taken. These include using sturdy candle holders, keeping away from flammable materials and extinguishing candles before leaving a room. It is important, especially for older people, to be vigilant so that such tragic incidents can be avoided in the future.
