Merz calls for a strong course: Germany should take on a leading role in Europe!
In a succinct government statement in the Bundestag today, Chancellor Friedrich Merz made it clear that Germany is “back on the European and international stage”. In the midst of global crises and challenges, Merz focuses on the country's role in the world. On this occasion, he called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and called for humane treatment of civilians, especially women, children and the elderly. Merz noted that Israel has the right to defend itself and pointed to Iran's support for groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthi militia, which add further complexity to the situation.
Another central theme of this statement was the ongoing Russian airstrikes on Ukraine. Merz strongly condemned the attacks and emphasized that peace always requires the willingness of all sides. He criticized Russia for currently showing no willingness to make peace and made it clear that it was not true that diplomatic options in the Ukraine conflict had remained unused. The Chancellor noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin only understands “the language of strength” and that a real solution is only possible in this way.
NATO summit with a view to Ukraine
At the same time, there are developments in the international space that also affect Germany. The upcoming NATO summit, which is taking place in Washington to mark the alliance's 75th anniversary, is dominated by the Ukraine conflict. It discusses the situation in Ukraine, which has been in a deadlock for some time, especially after the devastating attacks that claimed at least 27 lives in Kiev. It is planned that the NATO countries will pledge a total of 40 billion euros for Ukraine, although the support depends largely on the US elections in November. Donald Trump, who is considered a critic of NATO, plays a key role here as he threatens to stop US aid to Ukraine.
Another worrying aspect is that the promotion of Ukrainian air defense is considered a central theme of the summit. The coordination of weapons deliveries is also being discussed, and a new headquarters in Wiesbaden is intended to improve logistics. Former NATO strategist Stefanie Babst has also called for Europe to develop a robust containment strategy against Russia, but this is rejected by Germany and the US. These developments show how important a clear and decisive foreign policy is.
Merz’s foreign policy ambitions
In this context, Friedrich Merz has ambitious plans to transform Germany from a “sleeping middle power” to a “leading middle power”. However, this requires more than just symbolically strong performances. Clear foreign policy lines are necessary to underpin Merz’s claim to leadership. Critics note that contradictions in his stance, particularly in connection with the conflict in Israel and Ukraine, could jeopardize his plans. It is therefore essential for Merz to fulfill his promises at upcoming NATO and EU summits.
Merz is optimistic about a solution to the tariff dispute with the USA and warns that tariffs would “benefit no one” and harm all sides. If an agreement cannot be reached, he will insist that the EU vigorously defends its interests. The coming weeks are crucial for the future not only of Germany, but also for stability in Europe and beyond. Where are we after all these challenges? That remains to be seen, but Merz’s approaches must now be translated into action.
For many, what remains to be observed is how Germany positions itself in these uncertain times and what role the Chancellor will play in the growing international responsibility. One thing is clear: Europeans look to Germany and expect leadership.
